The UAE is starting 2025 with a transformative step in public health and food regulation. As of June, a groundbreaking nutritional classification system, "Nutri-Mark," has become mandatory for five key food categories. This initiative, led by quality control and health officials in Abu Dhabi, underscores the country's commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles and improving transparency in the food industry.

Mandatory Compliance for Food Products

Under the new regulations, products displayed on supermarket shelves without the "Nutri-Mark" label will be withdrawn from sale. Non-compliant parties will face penalties, including fines. Furthermore, products falsely displaying a higher grade than warranted will also be subject to strict sanctions.

The "Nutri-Mark" label evaluates the nutritional value of products and classifies them into grades ranging from A to E:

  • A: Denotes the healthiest choices.
  • E: Indicates products with the lowest nutritional value.

Initially, this system applies to five food categories:

  1. Baked goods
  2. Oils
  3. Dairy products
  4. Baby food
  5. Beverages

Aiming to Combat Obesity

Dr. Ahmed Al Khazraji, Acting Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center, emphasized the importance of the new system. He stated, "This initiative addresses the growing issue of obesity by providing consumers with simplified and transparent nutritional information." By making informed choices, consumers can better manage their diets and prioritize healthier options.

Future Expansions

Following the successful implementation of the first phase, additional food items will gradually be included under the "Nutri-Mark" classification system. This phased approach ensures a smooth transition for manufacturers and retailers while fostering a culture of health consciousness among consumers.

Impact on the Market and Public Health

The introduction of "Nutri-Mark" represents a significant step forward in public health policy. It aligns with the UAE's broader vision of promoting healthy lifestyles and combating non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues. Retailers and manufacturers will need to adapt quickly to comply with these regulations, while consumers stand to benefit from increased transparency in the marketplace.

Conclusion: Partnering for a Healthier Future

The UAE's introduction of the "Nutri-Mark" system is a bold step towards fostering healthier lifestyles and ensuring transparency in food labeling. This initiative not only promotes public health but also signals a transformative shift in regulatory compliance for businesses in the food sector.
