What Is a UAE Will?
A UAE will — sometimes called an onshore or notary will — is a will drafted under UAE law and notarised before the competent authority: Dubai Courts for Dubai, or the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD), which operates a dedicated wills registry for non-Muslims. Once notarised, it is recognised by courts across the Emirates.
Following the reforms of the UAE Personal Status framework, non-Muslim residents enjoy significant testamentary freedom: you may leave your estate to whomever you choose, subject to the will being validly drafted and registered. Muslim testators can also make a will within the parameters set by Sharia principles — most commonly directing up to one-third of the estate and recording guardianship wishes.
The onshore route is usually the most cost-effective way to protect UAE-wide assets, and it is the natural choice where assets are held outside Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah or where an Arabic-language instrument enforceable in the local courts is preferred.
